CFA Institute Research Challenge in Switzerland

Swiss final presentations and award ceremony on 6 March 2013

On 6 March 2013, CFA Society Switzerland hosted the Swiss final presentations of the 8 finalist teams of the CFA Institute Research Challenge at the University of Zürich. 8 teams from the universities of Berne, Fribourg, Geneva, Lausanne, Lugano, Neuchâtel, St. Gallen and Zurich presented their investment case in front of a panel of judges which were all leading senior investment professionals and mostly CFA Charterholders. After their 10 minutes presentation, they had to answer detailed and challenging questions form that panel of judges. The team of the University of Geneva (Joao Pedro De Oliveira, Lorena Garzoni, Stéphane Murset and Yu Shi) delivered the best presentation and the team from the University of Lausanne delivered the best research report, which had been graded during the month of February by 6-8 CFA Charterholder out of our Swiss member base. The overall winner of the CFA Institute Research challenge in Switzerland was the team of the University of Lausanne (Lara Perhat, Federica Scandella, Maria Strompolakou and Ines Verschueren) which will represent Switzerland in the EMEA finals on 10-11 April 2013 in London.

In the evening, the award ceremony took place in the aula of the university. Professor Michel Habib held an address where he put the CFA Institute Research Challenge in an academic context. Filippo Rima, CFA, a Managing Director of Credit Suisse held a guest speech detailing the most critical factor in a professional career being serving the clients the best. The winning team received a trophy and a cash price of CHF 1000, and the winners of the category prices for the best presentation and the best reports each received a certificate and as well a cash price. Florian Esterer, CFA, Vice President of CFA Society Switzerland said: "Swiss CFA Society has organized the CFA Institute Research Challenge in Switzerland for the fourth year. Over the last few years, the number of participating students increased every year which shows how important initiatives to combine academic concepts and practical applications are. With educational initiatives such as the CFA Institute Reserach Challenge, CFA Institute endeavors to further improve the degree of professionalism in the financial services industry. After their graduation, students have the possibility to sit for the examinations to earn the CFA Designation".

We are enormously grateful to the large number of CFA Charterholder volunteers from of our Swiss membership base who supported us in this important educational initiative in Switzerland, being 8 judges, 18 graders and as many as 24 mentors from all regions of Switzerland. We also acknowledge the generous sponsoring of Credit Suisse through its Campus Recruiting Switzerland as well as the media partnership with Tamedia. Those two institutions have been supporting us for the fourth year in a row.

The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an equity research competition among student teams from the world’s top university business and finance programs. Students write an equity research report on a publicly traded company, and present their findings to an expert panel. The teams are judged on their written reports and the presentations and a winner is selected. Throughout the competition, leading investment professionals volunteer as mentors and judges and teach these students best practices in equity research and corporate analysis. Learn more about the Research Challenge.

CFA Society Switzerland will be hosting the local competition of the CFA Institute Research Challenge for the third year in conjunction with the participating universities. The universities will assemble teams of 3 - 5 business and finance students who will work directly with Tecan - the company that was selected for this year's challenge - in researching and preparing a company analysis.

The company will present to students and mentors during the kick-off in Zurich on 26 September 2012 and in Neuchâtel on 27 September 2012 (See important dates).

The team's reports and final presentations will be evaluated by a high-profile panel of judges (composed of heads of research, portfolio managers, and chief investment officers from Switzerland's leading financial firms). The teams will present just prior to the award ceremony on 6 March 2013 in the Aula of the University of Zurich. The winning teams will receive a total price money of CHF 3'000.

The Swiss champions will advance to the EMEA regional competition, which will take place in London on 10-11 April 2013 and hopefully to the global final, which will take place on the following day 12 April 2013 in London.
